Whitespace as a hierarchy tool

Instead of adding weight to emphasise, we removed density around it. Comprehension scores rose while the component count dropped.

Emphasis is usually additive: bolder type, a badge, a coloured background. Each addition competes with the last, and the page slowly becomes a shouting match.

The subtractive version is quieter and stronger. Give the important element more room than anything near it and the eye finds it first, without a single extra pixel of decoration.

We removed four highlight components from the system and improved task comprehension in testing. Space is the only design element that never needs a dark-mode variant.
